GREAT CITIES OF THE WORLD

by Marco Cattaneo & Jasmina Trifoni
________

About this book:
Today 3 billion people are concentrated in urban areas and 650 million of them live in the world's 300 most populous cities. By 2007, urban residents will outnumber the population of rural areas for the first time in history.

Large cities have contributed immeasurably to the development of human culture in terms of knowledge, the arts, architecture, and industrial progress. However, only during the last 50 years have cities had such a significant impact on our everyday lives; not until today have conglomerations of 20 or 30 million people existed.

This stunning book spans the globe and captures the true essence of 60 of the world's largest and greatest cities. Some like Athens, Rome and Cairo, have fascinated visitors for thousands of years. Others are just a few centuries old, like Cape Town, Singapore, Sydney or St. Petersburg, which was built on the orders of Peter the Great at the start of the 18th century. Some cities are vast, with populations in continual, rapid expansion. Others, particularly in Europe, number just a few hundred thousand inhabitants; their greatness belonging to past historical eras.

With lively text and stunning photography The Great Cities of the World examines civilization through the places where man has chosen to live. This comprehensive volume describes these cities' histories and architecture while also focusing on their modern ambience and dynamics; on the metropolitan pulse that makes a city a living organism.
