GREAT CONTEMPORARIES BY WINSTON CHURCHILL / 1ST US / HC

Churchill, Sir Winston S.  GREAT CONTEMPORARIES.  NY: Putnam, 1937.  8vo (approx 6.25 x 9.25”).   x, 299, (1) pp.  Bound in publisher’s full navy cloth, gilt (silver) lettering and decoration on red blocking on spine and cover.  T.E.G. (red).  Fore-edge deckle.  Illustrated with 21 B&W portraits (of each subject).  Includes detailed index.

FIRST AMERICAN EDITION.  Hardcover without dust jacket.  The volume is in excellent condition, tight and square and seemingly unread.  The spine (only) is lightly rubbed.  No ownership marks.  NEAR FINE.

Just before World War II, Winston Churchill wrote these 21 biographies of his contemporaries, both good and bad.  Subjects include George Bernard Shaw, Hindenberg, Lawrence of Arabia, Marshal Foch, Leon Trotsky, Arthur Balfour, Adolph Hitler, King George V, and  13 others.  A portrait of each of the 21 subjects is included.  They provide a fascinating look at pre-war Europe through the eyes of its most intelligent observer and the greatest statesman of the age.
