The Pedroni Theatrical Troupe arrived hungry and tired in the little town of Waldau, Switerland, to find that the golden apple, symbol of the town, has been stolen.  Because the townspeople blamed another troupe of traveling players, they refused to allow the Pedronis to put on their plays.  The troupe needed money badly, but when Tony Pedroni protested to the town officials, he lost his temper and was put in jail.  The two boys of the troupe, Caspar and Carlo, found friends among the children of Waldau.  With Rix, the Mayor's son, and Lisel, on of the girls, they planned to solve the Pedronis' difficulties by putting on a benefit play with all the children of the town as actors.  The townspeople ignored the children's efforts until Rix discovered a clue of what happened to the Golden Apple and promised that the children's play would reveal the solution to the mystery.
