The Efe and Gelede masquerade honor the awesome spiritual powers of the elderly women known as " Our Mothers"( a won iya wa ). These performances touch upon virtually all aspects of Yoruba life and thought.( Physical, social, and spiritual)Ogun, the god of iron and war, controls snakes, and their depiction as metaphor for supernatural powers is particularly appropriate in the context of Gelede. In some areas of Yoruba land, priests possessed by Ogun, dance with snakes draped around their shoulders.
