Introduction
This account of the early history of Putnam County was prepared in commemoration of the one-hundredth anniversary of the Putnam County Pioneer Association.
To adequately cover the field of the history of Putnam County from 1820 to 1972 would take years of research, involve the expenditure of thousands of dollars, and result in the production of several volumes of history, not just one book.
Accordingly, it was decided to place the emphasis in this book on the early history of the county, roughly from 1820 to 1900. We have dealt primarily with pioneer settlements, and the gradual development of this county from a wilderness to a thriving agricultural-industrial complex.
We used, for the most part, available county histories for much of our material. County histories have certain drawbacks. To be mentioned in those histories it usually was necessary to subscribe (pay for) to the history in advance of publication. As a result we know that there were many people, who lived in the county, who were omitted from the records in those books because they did not subscribe to the books. Even after searching other sources we feel that there were other early settlers whose names we were unable to find.
The work of producing this book has been most interesting for all of us who were engaged in the project. It has made us realize what a fertile and greatly untapped field, for historical research, exists in Putnam County.
This book could not have been written or produced without the cooperation, moral and financial support, and volunteer efforts of a great many interested citizens of Putnam County. In this book recognition by name has been given to many persons for their particular contributions to this project.
Others assisted us in various ways. Particular thanks go to Margaret (Mrs. Jack) Howell who typed all the Veterans’ names, and to Jan (Mrs. David) Crawfis who typed Pioneer Reminiscences. Both Margaret Howell and Jan Crawfis typed a great deal of additional material for this book. Others who helped with the typing were: Lila Stauffer, Margaret Welty, Lillian Clevenger, Carmi Leopold, Beverly Beining, and the Senior Typing class of Ottawa-Glandorf H.S., Sam Gomer, teacher.
Additional valuable assistance was contributed by the following persons: Mrs. Elmer Gerding, Elmer Unverferth, Richard Laudick, Sr., Mr. and Mrs. O. J. Neill, Mrs. Elmer Diller, Richard Recker and staff, Amanda Lighthill and staff, Evelyn (Mrs. Ewing) Wood, Martha Huber, Hildred Safford, Mrs. J. R. Ecklebarger, Alphonse Schulte, Robert J. Wing, George Roberts, Ohio Power Co., Earl W. Roe, Manager, Charles S. Reese.
Every effort possible has been made to assure the accuracy of the material in this book. If there are errors, they are errors of omission, not of commission.
No formal bibliography is given for this history. Some of the sources used in the preparation of the book were: 1880 Putnam County Atlas, 1895 Putnam County Atlas, 1896 Allen-Putnam County History, 1915 Putnam County History, Putnam County Court House records, United States Census records, records in Church Archives, old letters in the possession of Putnam County families, old newspaper files, and various other sources.

Book Grading Guidelines
- New (N): Just like it sounds. A brand new, unused copy in perfect condition.
- As-New (AN): An apparently unread copy in perfect condition. Dust jacket is intact, pages are clean and are not marred by notes of folds of any kind. Suitable for presenting as a gift.
- Fine (F): A book that approaches As New, but without the crispness. There can be no visible defects, the book is clean and bright, and it's dust jacket is without rips or stains.
- Very Good (VG): A copy that has been read, but remains in excellent condition. Pages are intact and are not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
- Good (G): A copy that has been read, but remains in clean condition. It may show some wear and perhaps small tears. Defects will be noted.
- Poor (P): A readable copy. All pages are intact, and the cover is intact (the dust jacket may be missing). Pages can include considerable notes-- in pen or highlighter-- but the notes cannot obscure the text. Often an out-of-print or hard-to-find book.
- Ex-Library (Ex-Lib): A book that once belonged to a public or institutional library. Usually these books show some markings on the spine, title and copyright pages, as well as the end pages.
Note: Book and dust jacket are graded separately. The first rating is for the book, the second is the dust jacket. We try to grade as accurately as possible; however, please understand that grading used books is a very subjective process.
