Confederate general (1821–1908) who led troops at Shiloh, Chickamagua, Chattanooga, Atlanta, and elsewhere. Lengthy ALS signed “Alex. P. Stewart,” two pages both sides, 4.75 x 7.75, June 23, 1895. Stewart writes from Chickamauga to his granddaughter, Hannah Chase Stewart, in St. Louis. In part: “We had a charming visit from Miss Lewis, whom we think a charming & superior girl; and wished so much we could have had you here with her. But of course it was right for you not to come…. And what are you going to do with your precious self? There is a girl at Murfreesboro, Tenn., Will Allen Dromgoole [prolific writer; 1860–1934] by name, who is achieving quite a reputation as a writer. She read a piece recently on Lookout Mountain to the Lady Editors of Georgia, which was published in the Chattanooga Times of to-day. I must send you a copy—it may give you some new ideas….When does the P— Springs Encampment take place? I fear it will be too near the Park dedication … to admit of my going. The hurt received April 30 is slowly healing…. The process of healing is very slow, no doubt on account of my age…. 'Titus' was very interesting indeed, yet a trifle disappointing in that Titus did not escape. In this case, however, we are to regard his crucifixion as the greatest possible blessing & favor, and at the same time a heavy blow to his father, the High Priest….” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
