Four or More FB-DIMMs
installed provides for best performance
For maximum performance,
the latest Mac Pro uses 800MHz DDR2 fully buffered ECC memory, a new
industry-standard memory technology that allows for more memory capacity,
higher speeds, and better reliability. When using all four
memory channels, Mac Pro has a 256-bit wide memory path for a maximum
memory bandwidth of 21.3GB per second. To achieve maximum bandwidth, four or
more DIMMs should be installed in a Mac Pro.
Please note: The fully
buffered DIMMs made by Apple include a unique heat
sink that provides more efficient cooling than other FB-DIMMs.
These FB-DIMMs require less airflow to stay cool and
allow the internal fans to spin at slower speeds, improving system acoustics.
FB-DIMMs made by other manufacturers that do not
include a sufficient heat sink may cause the fans to run faster (and louder) or
the memory chips to run slower so as not to overheat.
Apple
specifically designed the Mac Pro with more space between each slot to allows the use of a larger heat-spreader on each module. The
larger heat-spreader and the use of the highest grade, thermally
tolerant components ensures that these will provide a lifetime of
reliable and trouble free operation.
Warning
Apple notes that using parts with the standard heat-spreader and which
only meet JEDEC standard specifications can result in higher fan speeds due to
increased internal temperatures and system controlled reduction of memory
performance to prevent thermal overload. In testing, it was found that use of
such modules leads to ECC errors and ultimate system lock ups as such modules
reach significantly higher temperatures than those of Apple's qualified spec.
Two well known memory manufacturers originally
listed their own JEDEC standard modules as being Mac Pro compatible. Within
days of doing so, each removed this compatibility support after reports and
testing which made clear JEDEC standard modules were not reliable in the Mac
Pro.
JEDEC is the
leading developer of standards for the solid-state industry. Almost 3300
participants, appointed by some 295 companies work together in 50 JEDEC
committees to meet the needs of every segment of the industry, manufacturers
and consumers alike. The publications and standards that they generate are
accepted throughout the world. All JEDEC standards are available online, at no
charge.
