Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

Writer-director Kevin Smith's fifth and final installment of his New Jersey Chronicles (which began in 1994 with the breakout, low-budget comedy CLERKS) is a chance for scene-stealing, foulmouthed stoner Jay (Jason Mewes) and his taciturn sidekick/"hetero life mate" Silent Bob (Smith) to carry their own movie. When comic store mogul Brodie (Jason Lee, reprising his MALLRATS role) informs Jay and Silent Bob that a movie featuring their comic book alter egos, Bluntman and Chronic, is about to be made, the duo demands a cut from the comic's creator, Holden (Ben Affleck, in his CHASING AMY role). Holden explains that his ex-partner, Banky (Lee again) has sold them out, and shows them some angry Internet posts from Bluntman and Chronic fans. Fearing for their reputations, Jay and Silent Bob embark on a cross-country odyssey to Hollywood to stop the film. En route, they run afoul of a Charlie's Angels-type jewelry thief ring--one of whom, Justice (Shannon Elizabeth) takes a liking to Jay--an orangutan, a Federal Wildlife Marshall (Will Ferrell), and Miramax studio security. Smith's fond farewell to his intertwined Jersey characters is a lovingly crude, broad comedy rife with celebrity cameos, slapstick movie spoofs, and clever jabs at Hollywood.

Imaginative theology and a bigger-than-usual budget make Kevin Smith's (CHASING AMY, CLERKS) fourth film a kind of post-Catholic fantasy that only a comic-book enthusiast of his caliber could dream up. It concerns banished angels, Loki (Matt Damon) and Bartleby (Ben Affleck) who, after a few millennia in Wisconsin, discover a loophole in Catholic doctrine that would allow them back into heaven--but prove the fallibility of God and destroy the universe. As they make their way to New Jersey to receive a plenary indulgence, God dispatches a seraphim (Alan Rickman) to recruit lapsed-Catholic Bethany (Linda Fiorentino) to stop the angels. She finds help in muses, prophets (Jay and Silent Bob), and the forgotten 13th apostle, Rufus (Chris Rock). Before long, all hell breaks loose (literally), and God (Alanis Morrisette) has to put in an appearance of her own. Smith's controversial (and very funny) film is powered by his trademark dialogue, ripe with observations on pop culture, religion, and bodily functions.

DOGMA was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 1999.

The film was shot on location in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Several groups, including the Catholic League, protested the film.

Smith wrote DOGMA before CLERKS, and the credits of the latter include the promise "Jay and Silent Bob will return in DOGMA."

Emma Thompson was slated to play the role of God, but had to drop out when she became pregnant.
 
Connections between DOGMA and other Kevin Smith films include the character Grant Hicks, who is a cousin to Dante from CLERKS and Gill from MALLRATS. All three characters are played by Brian O'Halloran. Also, a bus company in the film is owned by Rick Derris, a perennial Smith character.

The sequences in Hell with the "Grim Reaper" are a comic hommage to Ingmar Bergman's "The Seventh Seal" (1957). In Bergman's film the protagonist plays a game of chess with "Death" in order to win a short reprieve from his fate and come back to life. In "Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey", the duo challenge "His Royal Deathness" to games of Battleship, Clue and Twister.

We combine shipping if the items are paid for and shipped together. We try to send invoices at the beginning and end of our day. However, we may send them through out the day also.
