George Crionas Original Hand Colored, Hand Signed Etching, "Cocktail Time", 88 of 100 made. Triple matted and framed, except the frame shows some scratches and imperfections on it. The matting also shows the etching is not centered and may need to be remounted. Seventies vintage with original numbered certificate from the Royal Art, Ltd, Auction House. The etching measures 7.75" x 8.75", and the frame measures 15.25" x 16.25".
Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1925, his career began almost the moment he could manipulate a pencil. By age 13, George's work was being published in the Detroit News, prompting one writer to note that" Little George Crionas is an extraordinary talent, with nothing but a bright future ahead.
In World War II, George designed and painted emblems and insignia for the nose sections of B-29's.
Moving to California in 1947, Crionas began a long period of study under masters, Francis DeErderly, Rico Lebrun, and Howard Warshaw. To further his career, he drew caricatures at night, of the many famous celebrities, who frequented the bars and supper clubs of the era. He sold his paintings to these same clients, who are proud to say today that they own his work.
Best known for the very human qualities his clowns portray, he interjects a special uniqueness of spirit into his impressions of gambling, street scenes, and portraits. His mediums include oil, acrylic, etchings, and more recently, serigraphs and lithographs.
Mr. George Crionas passed away in 2004.
