George Washington and family CDV image c. 1865-70

Image CDV configuration George Washington and family, 2 1/2"x3 1/4", this came from a CDV album that contained Civil War images. The General looks as if he has just returned from a campaign, perhaps from the war. Spurs are on his boots, his hat, sword, and a map are on the table. Martha is attentive and her children, from a former marriage, seem slightly more relaxed and natural. We have seen the painting before (or one similar) that this scene is derived from. It has a feel of an itinerant artist, somewhat formulaic. If Washington had been an Admiral instead of a General it is likely the background scene would have been a harbor with a man of war at anchor. It is most likely the Potomac River. These CDV style images often came with a CDV album, as if one is urged to aim high on the quality of their own CDVs. The condition is excellent with lovely contrast. We do not know if the margins were trimmed to fit the album.
