This is a very 'pretty' book, attractively laid out with wide margins and lots of white space, many simple 'cartoon' diagrams, and 17 colored plates. . . . The format is reminiscent of high school texts and introductory books on subjects relating to 'science for the layman.' The authors present an introduction to the properties of polymer molecules in simple language at a somewhat superficial level. . . . Although the book is not quantitative (and not intended to be), it is sprinkled with equations and formulas, most of which the reader is asked to accept on faith. It is mostly easy reading, but could be difficult to comprehend in places where attempts are made to explain mathematical and physical relations using little or no math or physics. Some topics, such as fractals, go beyond the usual introductory scope; there is a nice qualitative description and a simplistic introduction to polymers for those not familiar with the subject. . . . The authors set out the mathematics we need to understand the structure of simple polymers, without drowning us in too many formulas. . . . The concept of a fractal is beautifully illustrated by a cauliflower. . . . Polymers in solution adopt fractal shapes, and the mathematics of fractals is used in novel analyses of DNA sequences. . . . I would have welcomed mention of new developments, such as auxetic foams. . . . The recycling of polymers would have been worth mentioning, too.
