You are bidding on Gilbert Keith Chesterton by Maisie Ward
1943 Sheed & Ward (New York)
First Edition, First Printing Complete with Very-Hard-to-Find Dust Jacket! The British version of this book did not come out until 1944, so this is indeed the very first edition.
Book is in solid condition with bent corners and faded edges. Names written in pen on the attached front end page. Except for some discoloring to the end pages, the interior is otherwise very clean and mark-free, with cream-colored pages. The unclipped dust jacket is dingy and a bit worn and tattered around the edges as shown. There seems to be a bit of mothball smell. All-in-all nice copy. Note: The picture of the copyright page did not turn out very well. This is how it reads: "Copyright, 1943, by Sheed & Ward, Inc." In later printings of this edition, the various printings are listed. None are listed in this book. The printer is "BURR PRINTING HOUSE, INC., NEW YORK" [This information is given to authenticate that the book listed is indeed a first printing.]
G K Chesterton was a mentor and colleague of Dorothy Sayers. Along with Agatha Christie and others, they started the "Detection Club" in the 1920's. The Club is still in existence. "Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936) cannot be summed up in one sentence. Nor in one paragraph. In fact, in spite of the fine biographies that have been written of him, he has never been captured between the covers of one book. But rather than waiting to separate the goats from the sheep, let's just come right out and say it: G.K. Chesterton was the best writer of the 20th century. He said something about everything and he said it better than anybody else. But he was no mere wordsmith. He was very good at expressing himself, but more importantly, he had something very good to express. The reason he was the greatest writer of the 20th century was because he was also the greatest thinker of the 20th century.
"Chesterton was equally at ease with literary and social criticism, history, politics, economics, philosophy, and theology. His style is unmistakable, always marked by humility, consistency, paradox, wit, and wonder. His writing remains as timely and as timeless today as when it first appeared, even though much of it was published in throw away papers." -- from an article by Dale Ahlquist on the American Chesteron Society web site chesterton.org.
