| The
Tokonoma Series was inspired by the
Asian art displayed in tokonomas alcoves.
As the sacred center of a traditional
Japanese home, tokonomas were reserved
for treasured items like scrolls or calligraphy,
beautiful kimonos, ikebana flower arrangements,
miniature bonsai trees, and fine ceramics
for tea ceremonies. The items displayed
were changed for special occasions, according
to the season, or to create different
settings and atmospheres. |
|
| The
ginkgo leaf symbolizes longevity. |
| Perhaps
the reason the ginkgo symbolizes longevity
is because it can have a life span of
1,000 years or older. Or perhaps because
the Ginkgo biloba tree is one of the oldest
trees on earth. For centuries it was thought
to be extinct in the wild, and that it
had dyed off from the drastic climate
change of the ice age. However, the ginkgo
was re-discovered in eastern China in
the mid-1700s cultivated as a scared tree
in temple gardens. |
|
| |
| Ginkgo
crest was stenciled with textile inks
and black fabric was printed with an Art
Nouveau inspired design in metallic umber
textile paint.
|
|
| I
selected fabrics with an art nouveau
floral pattern, and the tiled or stained
glass fabric reminiscent of the Prairie
style or the Arts and Crafts period.
|
|
Definitely a terrific piece
in either of those design styles,
in home or office. A larger version
is also available pre-matted and ready
for a 10” x 8” frame of
your choice. |

| Award-winning
& self-taught artist Linda M. Olszanski
specializes in creating Quilt
Art collages that portray metaphorical
imagery inspired by nature and science.
Linda composes improvisational styled
collage quilts with a variety of fabrics,
threads, and embellishments. Unlike traditional
quilts composed of 3 separate layers;
she pieces, appliqués and embroiders directly
on a layered foundation of fabric and
quilt batting which results in immediate
dimensionality. |

|
| The
improvisational collage style of composing
allows me the freedom to explore and
discover unexpected evolutions of the
content and meaning behind the metaphorical
imagery.
While
the metaphoric images have specific
meaning to me, they are also enigmatic
in that the viewer can bring their own
personal experience to their interpretation.

and lecturer since 1994, Linda’s art
