Item specifics
Plant Name: Goji Berry
Goji Berry - (Lycium Barbarum) $4.95 ea.

Goji berries Lycium Barbarum have been used in China for thousands of years as medicinal food. Goji berries are very high in antioxidants, particularly, beta-carotene and zeaxanthin that protects the retina of the eyes as well as 18 kinds of amino acids, 21 trace minerals including cancer-fighting Selenium and Germanium, Vitamins B1, B2, B6, C, & E. Goji berries have more Vitamin C than oranges, more Beta-carotene than carrots, and more iron than spinach. Modern science has shown that this bright red berry not only contains extremely high levels of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, but also contains many unique phytochemicals, polysaccharides, and complex compounds that scientists are just beginning to understand.

Goji Berries contain the following complex compounds;

Betaine; which is used by the liver to produce choline, a compound that calms nervousness, enhances memory, promotes muscle growth, and protects against fatty liver disease.

Physalin; which is active against all major types of leukemia. It has also been used as a treatment for hepatitis B.

Solavetivone; a powerful anti-fungal and anti-bacterial compound.

Beta-Sitoserol; an anti-inflammatory agent. It has been used to treat sexual impotence and prostate enlargement. It also lowers cholesterol.

Cyperone; a sesquiterpene that benefits the heart and blood pressure. It has also been used in the treatment of cervical cancer.

The Goji Berry is also being called the world’s most powerful anti-aging food. It is rated #1 on the ORAC scale (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity), which measures the antioxidant level in foods. It is a test developed by USDA researchers out of Tufts University in Boston. The Berry possesses an unmatched ability to absorb injurious, free radicals that attack the body and contribute to the aging process and many diseases. (chart below)

Goji berry grows well in a wide range of soils with a ph of 7.0 - 8.0 and are hardy to -15 degrees F. Can reach heights of six to eight feet. Pruning to shape will increase berry production. Plants start producing fruit in their second year. Flowers start to appear in mid summer followed by green berries that turn a brite red in late summer into fall. They can be eaten fresh or dehydrated and stored in sealed plastic bags. I keep mine in the refrigerator in a zip-loc bag. They also can be grown in containers and do quite well using a good potting mix. I find they do best growing in a 3 to 5 gallon container once the bushes reach a height of two feet or so. That will happen quickly, so have your larger containers ready if you plan on growing them in pots.

Shipping size: Plants are currantly growing in quart containers. In most cases the pot will be removed and the rootball wrapped for shipping. Plants will need to be stepped up to gallon size containers or larger if you are considering growing them this way. The shipping cost is $6.50 for the first plant and .50 cents for each additional.

Note:  These are first year plants, and they are dormant now... They will be shipped without leaves this time of year...
