Silver bromide, galena, pyrite, gold ore specimen from the Deer Trail gold mine located near Cottonwood Creek in the Mount Baldy district of the Tushar mountains, near Marysville, in Piute County, Utah. Any blue you can see when you click on the pictures above is silver bromide. (Click on the picture to make it enlarge) The yellow flecks you can see all over are pyrite crystals. The grey/black is galena. According to the Unico website, this historic gold ore should run somewhere from 2 ounces to 7 ounces of gold per ton. The gold is in the pyrite and the galena. The ruler is in inches and the U.S. Quarter is for size scale. This specimen measures 3/4" x 3/4" x 5/8", and weighs 7.5 grams.
This specimen was acquired by me on the mine dump at the Deer Trail Mine. I live in Layton, Utah and have done a lot of gold dredging in the past in Idaho and California. Back in 1998 Jim Lindsey, a Physics teacher at Layton High School, was teaching a gold prospecting class to adults in the evenings. Jim spends his summers prospecting for gold. He grew up in Beaver, Utah at the base of the Tushar mountain range and knows them and their historic gold mines well. He arranged a field trip for his Gold Prospecting class to the Deer Trail Mine that fall. He paid me to come along and set up a gold dredge and a highbanker, and demonstrate the use of metal detectors for electronic prospecting on Cottonwood Creek in the canyon just south of the mine. Since everyone could not fit on the underground train to go into the mine at the same time, I was to provide the above ground teaching and entertainment while Jim with 1/2 of the class went underground. I was supposed to get to go down into the mine after the second group, but that never happened. The batteries on the train ran out of juice while the second group was coming back out. They had to hike back out the last half mile. When I finished up with the second group, Roger House, the mine caretaker at the time, told me I could collect anything I wanted off the mine dump, so I got busy. I was mainly looking for the rare dodecahedral fluorite (specimens listed in my store ) that came out of only one place in the mine, and spent most of my time finding them. As an afterthought I tried my metal detector on the mine dump late in the day. After I found the first piece of ore I showed it to Roger, and he told me it was the silver bromide gold ore. I only found 6 pieces total before dark, and I have already sold the smaller pieces. I have broken up one of the larger chunks of ore, and this is a piece of that.

We do not accept returns of eBay auctioned items for any reason other than that the item your received was not as described. Being human, I can on (rare) occasions make a mistake. For those rare occasions, I apologize in advance, and will do whatever it takes within reason to make things right with you, including but not limited to taking the item back and refunding you. We want you to be happy, but "I thought it was something else", or "I changed my mind" just does not cut it as a reason to return an item. This is a little family owned business; not K-Mart.
