An antique violin labelled Nicolaus Amatus
...auctioned at $1 with no reserve!
A gorgeus antique violin, a real beauty! The violin is an especially beautifully made copy of Nicolaus Amatus labelled "Nicolaus Amatus, Cremona...". The length of back is 35.9 cm, the size is a fullsize. The beautifully arched model is after Nicolaus Amatus. The archings are softly ascending from the edge rising high in the middle of top and back - the arching on top is more pronounced than on the back. The woods are very well selected, the top is a two piece top made of very beautiful old fine grained spruce, the two piece back of broadly flamed maple. The rich varnish is of a transparent yet intense warm and golden brown color over a yellow ground with some antiqueing and beautiful patination. The elongated soundholes have a very elegant appearance, they are clean and accurately cut.
Condition: there are some repairs to the top but _no soundpost or bassbar cracks_ or repairs. (a scratch might appear as an old soundpost crack on the picture). There are some minor repairs to the ribs and one very small repair on the back (at chinrest clamp, from edge). Also, there is some minor damage to the edges of the treble soundhole that obviously happened from setting the soundpost. The right upper corner is chipped and the left lower corner has been repaired.
