This guide book is dedicated to covering the South and North Bass trails and branch trails off from them.

The National Park Service does not maintain either the South Bass or the North Bass trails.  They are wilderness trails that have gone without repair for more than a half century.  The South Bass Trail gets more use, is shorter, and has less brush than the North Bass Trail.  But, it lacks dependable water except at the river. 

When you leave the rim you are on your own, so be prepared.  Both trails are a long way from help.  In an emergency, river parties may be able to help.  They usually camp at Lower Bass Camp below Bass Rapid on the north side of the Colorado during the main river season,  May through September.

You are responsible for your sefety and well-being.  Because the Bass Trails are very difficult and require route-finding ability, they are not recommended for first-time Grand Canyon overnight hikers.
