SPEED CONTROL:Standard on all machines for SPEED CONTROL is a "gate valve" (like the aperture on camera). You can open or close this to BYPASS air from the shop vac (included) before it goes through the shooting tube. This gives you the full range of speed control from almost zero to full speed. The shop vac is operating at full speed all the time.

The balls maximum speed is about 35 mph - but the machine is positioned only 20 feet away, which, according to the Pros, creates the equivilent of a 100-mph pitch!

Hitting Tips

Don't swing at every pitch!
The Grand Slam will deliver about 90% of the balls in the strike zone when you stand 16 - 25 feet from the machine, but swinging at pitches that are out of the strike zone is counter-productive to improving your batting average.

Slow the Grand Slam down!
You should be able to hit 75%-80% of the strikes the Grand Slam pitches before you speed up the the machine.

Stand 16 to 25 feet away!
The closer you are to the Grand Slam pitching machine, the faster the apparent speed of the ball. If you are hitting 90% of the strikes being thrown at you, take a step or two closer to the machine. You will be surprised at how fast the ball seems to be moving.

Add 6-10 Wiffle Balls to the Reservoir!
This will create a great change-up as the air travels through the holes in the ball. Add color to these balls if you would like with a marks-a-lot, so the hitter is able to determine that an off-speed pitch is being delivered.

Movement
When the speed is turned down on the Grand Slam, the ball will simply exit the tube at a low speed with very little movement. It is only when you turn the speed up to 60% or more that the ball moves around, while still staying close to the strike zone. When the machine is utilized at 60% or more of it capability, the balls are still easily hit and will yield great hand-eye coordination.

Improve Your Fielding

With the Grand Slam you can add our 45 degree elbow(included) and include fly ball catching.. Catch the ball with bare hands, so when you use a regular baseball or softball catching will dramatically improve. By turning the shooting tube around 180 degrees you can then shoot the ball on a flat surface, to practice grounders. Have your player catch the ball with bare hands or a "thin" flexible glove (a gardening leather glove is the best). Got to use common sense on this and DO NOT shoot the ball at a higher speed than what your player can handle. On the grounders, be sure to shoot the ball just in front of the player so that they have to nearly touch the ground to get the ball. This will prevent the old "oh no, it went under his glove" - error. This practice really requires adult help to be effective. You will both enjoy the results and time together. For the older boys that "think" they are beyond this, I got this tip from a pro that uses the machine for this additional practice.
