From the dub echoes of "Everybody Lay Down," to the eastern overtones of "Disconnected," to the shuffling bar blues of "Crazy" (featuring Neil Giraldo's Hendrix-soaked wah-wah guitar), Pat Benatar continues to redefine her sound in a '90s context.
Where her early hits featured a huge, metallic wall of sound, GRAVITY'S RAINBOW favors a spare, reverberant production, with plenty of ambient space to showcase the sound of her talented band. And where Benatar often has chosen to hide behind her characters and glory in her rock and roll voice, love songs like "You & I" show her peeking out a bit from that tough girl personna. Older fans will still be satisfied, however, with plenty of essential Benatar rock anthems like "Sanctuary."
