Metallic or β-tin converts to a non-metallic allotrope called gray or α-tin below 13.2°C in a process called tin pest, albeit imperceptibly slowly. With high purity tin the process accelerates below -20°C, although most tin can withstand temperatures down to -40°C. α-tin is a brittle, easily powdered material. Offered here is 1g of α-tin powder, which will be supplied with an engraved vial for display purposes. Please see our other items for solid pieces of crystalline α-tin. We also have allotropes of other elements available, including violet and black phosphorus - please email for details. |
