BRENHAM METEORITE POSTCARD This real photo postcard features the famous Brenham Meteorite (Main Mass) as displayed at the Big Well Museum in Greensburg, Kansas, before the tornado destroyed the museum in 2007. The meteorite has always been advertised as "The Largest Pallasite Meteorite in the World". This is not true...but it is one big and very nice meteorite so I will not tell them if you don't. The meteorite weighs 1,000 lbs or 454.54kg and was found in 1948 buried under 63 inches of prairie soil, near Greensburg. After the 2007 Greensburg tornado the meteorite was temporarily lost, but was found shortly after the disaster. The card measures 5 1/2 inches long and a little over 4 inches wide. Postcard is in very good condition and is free on any markings (other then the signature of course). It is postal unused.
![]() Front of Postcard Back of postcard reads in part: "BRENHAM METEORITE" "With a weight of 454.54 kilograms or 1000 pounds, this is the largest meteorite found in Brenham strewn field. The meteorite was discovered under 63 inches of dirt by H. O. Stockwell using an old wheel barrow metal detector in 1948. This is a rare type of meteorite known as a Stony-Iron Pallasite. Pallasites are characterized by having different amounts of olivine and iron-nickel..." Back also notes it is limited to 1000 copies and it also has been hand signed by the photographer.
![]() Back of Postcard Brenham Meteorite History: During February of 1886, Frank Kimberly and his wife Eliza moved to the plains and recorded a homestead claim in Kiowa County, Kansas. Here Eliza found black heavy rocks which she believed to be meteorites. For years, she sent letters describing the unusual stones to colleges and universities in an effort to verify her find, Frank thought she was crazy but continued to help Eliza collect them. Finally, of March of 1890, a professor from Washburn College in Topeka traveled to the Kimberly farm. A Harvard trained scientist with special interest in geology he determined that he was looking the meteorites were a rare type of meteorite - a pallasite - that would be a great treasure for scientific study. Pallasites are extremely beautiful meteorites characterized by having varying amounts of iron-nickel, and olivine, about 50/50. However in the Brenham find there are examples of solid irons that can be paired with the iron part of the Brenham meteorite.
