Set of Two Prints from the 1938 Patent Drawings
for Vintage Gretsch Drums by William 'Billy' Gladstone
This auction is for a set of two reproduction prints of the drawings that William D. Gladstone submitted to the United States Patent office on July 25, 1936. The final patent was awarded on October 4, 1938 and was assigned to the Fred Gretsch Manufacturing Company in Brooklyn.
In addition to high-profile endorsements from jazz giants Jo Jones & Chick Webb, Gretsch had the good fortune to have had a very productive collaborative relationship with famous New York City theatre drummer Billy Gladstone. The results were some of the most collectible drums of the era.
Though Gladstone patented many drum innovations both prior and subsequent to his relationship with Gretsch, his most significant were related to variable tuning technology and drum lug design. The lug details shown in these drawings can easily be recognized in the prized Gretsch Billy Gladstone snares.
There are two separate patent drawings included in this auction and each will be provided on artist quality, acid-free, 60-pound parchment style paper as shown above.
