Synopsis
A nine-year-old boy named Momik lives with his parents--Holocaust survivors--in Jerusalem. The parents refuse to speak of their time in the camps, and Momik is determined to understand their experience. Years later, Momik, as an adult, tries to save himself from personal and artistic sterility by an act of fantastic imagination. In another story, Momik tells an imaginary tale about his uncle in the camps.

Industry reviews
"...One of the most disturbing novels I've ever read...It crackles with sparks of artistic invention. It scrambles art and life together."
New York Times Book Review - Edmund White (04/16/1989)

"Grossman's claim to greatness as a novelist rests chiefly on the achievement of his second novel, 'See Under: Love', a daring work about the Holocaust....[It] was the first major novel by a younger writer to engage the Holocaust directly. The novel's appearance was all the remarkable because Grossman is not a child of survivors and does not belong to the so-called phenomenon of the 'Second Generation' writers and artists...whose work is compelled by the need to work through a relationship with survivor parents. Yet...the first ninety pages...are the most stunning piece of Holocaust literature I have read in any language"....With this novel Grossman earns his stripes as an adroit practitioner of postmodernism and magic realism."
Partisan Review - Alan Mintz
