Aegopodium Podagraria
Bishops Weed
Variegatum

You receive 4 freshly dug plants that are approx 4" wide similar to the ones shown below.

If you have an area that needs to look nice, but that you will never have to weed again, then this plant is for you! It will quickly fill in and its roots will form a barrier that no weeds or grass can grow through. This plant is the definition of "ground cover".

Warning. This plant should not be used in your regular flower beds as they can become invasive and crowd out anything else you have planted.

They are gorgeous in pots where they can be contained, or for the ugly patch on the side of your home, or anywhere you want green lushness and not have to work in the garden. See the photo below where I have it planted under my trees and  large gunnera.

At my gift store, we have a 1' by 10' bare area that runs along the sidewalk and the building. It was filled with gravel and weeds when we moved in. It was kind of a drip zone for the overhead sprinklers for baskets. I dug some of these up and literally stuck them in the gravel. They took over in no time and now we have a lush looking low growing "hedge" in that previously very ugly spot. In late summer when the leaves begin to fade and it is done flowering, we simply take a large set of shears and cut them off to about 3" and new growth will begin to form. I didn't think to take a picture of the storefront. These plants completely die down in winter and the new growth is just starting as you can see from the clumps I dug up for the photo.

They have a very long cycle as they did not die down until October and they are already re-sprouting. During their dormant period, the area just looks like gravel again.

These are grown in my garden and are freshly dug

Plant Information Type: perennial
Propagation: division
Light: any
Flower Color: white (looks similar to Queen Ann's Lace)
Height: 8-10 inches
Width: spreading habit
Soil Requirements: almost any soil
Zones: 3-10
Uses: groundcover

Aegopodium is an ideal, rapidly spreading groundcover for difficult areas. It provides a thick mass of coarse green and white leaves with saw-tooth edges. It grows to 8-10 inches and dies down in winter. Clusters of small white flowers come into bloom in midsummer, but their real glory is in their foliage. The foliage is exceptionally nice in a dark shady area where is seems to glow in the dark. I also grow it as a ground cover under my bamboo and under a grove of fir trees where nothing else will grow.

Aegopodium is suitable for areas where barriers can contain its vigorous growth, such as a strip between a house and a paved path. It will grow in almost any soil in sun or shade in Zones 3-10 and will thrive under most trees. It isn't discouraged by heavy clay soil. You can walk through it without much harm. In fact, a patch of Aegopodium with a foot worn trail running through it has a fairy forest look.

Plant in spring, setting plants 6 to 12 inches apart. New plants are propagated by dividing old ones in early spring while dormant, or in early fall when the season's growth has matured. Aegopodium is an aggressive grower best used by itself to underplant larger woody trees and shrubs. Sometimes, toward the end of hot, dry summers, the foliage will look tired and bedraggled. Just run the lawn mower over it and water it deeply a few times to encourage fresh new growth.

Questions and answers about this item
Q: Do you sell seeds for this plant? If so. I would like a lot. Please reply.
A: No, I have never harvested the seed... I have a lot of flowers so perhaps I will check tomorrow to see if there are seeds, although I believe they will be practically microscopic. I tend to gather seeds from plants that are... Continue reading
