Detailed item info
Synopsis
Living in Paris with his family, Marcel becomes infatuated with the Duchess of Guermantes and, through his friend St.-Loup, her nephew, he attempts to make her acquaintance. His initiation into aristocratic society includes an introduction not only to its splendors but to its vices, including the homosexuality of the Baron de Charlus and the anti-Semitism surrounding the Dreyfus Case. (The Duchess refers to Zola as "the Homer of the sewers.") In another world entirely, Marcel's adored grandmother dies an agonizing death.

Industry reviews
"The whole is a treasure hunt where the treasure is time and the hiding place the past....The transmutation of sensation into sentiment, the ebb and tide of memory, waves of emotions such as desire, jealousy, and artistic euphoria--this is the material of the enormous and yet singularly light and translucid work....Within the novel the narrator Marcel contemplates, in the last volume, the ideal novel he will write. Proust's work is only a copy of that ideal novel--but what a copy!"
"Lectures on Literature" - Vladimir Nabokov (01/01/1980)

"Tedious he is, but his tediousness becomes excusable once its cause is perceived. Proust tries our patience so long as we expect his story to move forward: that not being the direction in which it is intended to move....The movement is as that of an expanding flower or insect....Proust does not get forward, we complain. Why should he? Is there no other line of development in the universe?"
"Proust" - Clive Bell (01/01/1928)

"[Proust has] a tendency to fill in and stretch out a sentence to its utmost breadth and length, to cram into the stocking of the sentence a miraculous number of clauses, parenthetic phrases, subordinate clauses, sub-subordinate clauses. Indeed, in verbal generosity he is a veritable Santa."
"Lectures on Literature" - Vladimir Nabokov (01/01/1980)

"In spite of his independent manner, Proust has managed to inspire his novel with the prudent technical virtues of suspense and unity. These signs of formal interest are what make 'Remembrance of Things Past' a novel, rather than mere rambling reminiscence....It is held together by a method analogous to that which unifies actual human experience, repetition of events, physical and mental. "
New York Times Book Review - Rose Lee (07/05/1925)

"After all is said one is forced to utter the same comment: Proust is the greatest novelist of our age."
Contemporary Authors - Angel Flores (03/16/1930)

"Marcel Proust is perhaps the greatest psychological novelist of his generation....His lucidities are hidden. He does nothing at all to help you. If you would read him the effort must be yours. He does not descend even one step to meet you. He sits in a certain splendid isolation and demands that you come to him if you will."
Clark

"...As we go forward, the wonder grows....Here Proust is at his best, surest in touch, most subtle in description and analysis, and very rarely fatiguing us by losing himself in the later undertaking."
Clark

"Heuet's adaptation is neither a disgrace nor a work of genius; it's simply a respectable (and respectful) graphic narrative....The artist's main error is [to choose] a visual style totally unsuited to his characters and their creator's prose....Inviting enough to make readers seek out the novel--which means Heuet has done his job."
Kirkus Reviews  (05/01/2001)
