For many years, gymnastics has been one of the most exciting events at the Olympic games. During the 1970's, the Russian women's team dominated the sport. Ther Russians won the major events at the 1972 Olympics and were expected to do the same at the 1976 games in Montreal.

A tiny Romanian gymnast named Nadia Comaneci entered the arena in Montreal and captured the spectator's hearts. Nadia was only 14 years old when she came to the 1976 Olympics. She stood just under five feet tall and weighed 85 pounds.

The crowd was spellbound as it watched Nadia perform daring routines that included double backward somersaults. She didn't just perform difficult routines, Nadia performed them with more confidence, grace, and strength than anyone have ever seen before, especailly from such a young, small competitor.
