PARTIAL HISTORY OF RELIANCE:

Cutter L/B/D: 144 × 25.8 × 19.6 feet. Tons: 189 disp Hull: bronze plate on steel frames. Designer, Nathaniel G. Herreshoff Built: Herreshoff Manufacturing Co., Bristol, R.I.; 1903.

The largest single-masted vessel ever built, Captain Nat Herreshoff's fourth America's Cup defender, Reliance, was one of the earliest examples of a racing machine. Built for a syndicate headed by New York Yacht Club Commodore C. Oliver Iselin, below deck Reliance was an open, unfinished hull with exposed frames. She was the first America's Cup racer to employ winches below deck, giving her a decided advantage over the challenger, Sir Thomas Lipton's Shamrock III, which relied on unassisted manpower. Above all it was her massive sail plan that caught the eye. Reliance had a sparred length of 201 feet 6 inches from the tip of the bowsprit to the after end of the boom, her topmast towered 199 feet 6 inches above the waterline, and her spinnaker pole was 83 feet 9 inches long. Her 17,730 square feet of sail—equivalent to that of about eight 12-meter yachts—drove Reliance at speeds reaching 17.5 knots on her maiden voyage, faster than most of the steam yachts that sailed out to watch her.

Under the redoubtable Captain Charlie Barr, in the trial races Reliance easily defeated Columbia, which had defended the Cup against Lipton's Shamrock in 1899 and Shamrock II in 1901. In the first race against Lipton's third challenger, the William Fife-designed Shamrock III, in August 1903, Reliance sailed the thirty-mile course in 3 hours, 32 minutes, 17 seconds, winning with a margin of 7 minutes, 3 seconds. Lipton closed the gap in the second race, losing by only 1 minute, 18 seconds, against Reliance's time of 3 hours, 14 minutes, 54 seconds. The third race was sailed in light airs and neither boat finished within the allotted time.

Reliance finished her first and only season undefeated, for the next year she was broken up. By this point, the "90-footer" America's Cup boats—so called for their waterline length—were so extreme, costly, and even dangerous that Herreshoff was asked to devise a new rating rule. The Universal Rule was first employed in the next America's Cup challenge, held between Resolute and Shamrock IV in 1920. So entered the J Class Era.

From: Herreshoff, H. C., "A History of America's Cup Yacht Racing." Herreshoff, L. F., Captain Nat Herreshoff.
