Presented for sale is a rarely seen Hamilton "Secometer" 14 carat solid gold mid size watch in excellent overall condition and dating to the early 1950's. The classic round case has elegant haunched lugs and the newly restored dial looks great. The freshly serviced movement runs perfectly and keeps time. A new leather strap has just been fitted and the crystal has recently been replaced so everything has been done to this watch to ensure it is ready for immediate use. Triple signed on the dial, case and movement, as with all of my watches, authenticity is backed by a full money refund guarantee. Do not miss the opportunity to buy this timepiece. Although this watch was originally manufactured as a small gents watch it is also suitable for wear by a lady seeking the of the 1950's

The case is made of 14 carat solid gold and is in very good condition indeed. There are just the normal light marks on the case from careful and probably infrequent use but nothing of any significance that I could see to highlight. It measures approximately 29 mm across, excluding the crown and 39 mm from lug to lug. The outside and inside of the case are marked "Hamilton" and also hallmarked for 14K solid gold. There is a presentation engraving on the rear cover "Margaret J. Brown 25 Years Service Campbell Soup Company 1954". I am often asked whether the value of a watch is diminished by a presentation engraving but as it can usually be completely removed from a solid gold case by a either polishing it out or filling the engraving with gold, the question is somewhat academic. However what I almost always find is that a presentation watch has spent more time carefully stored in a drawer than on the wrist so they are maintained in great condition, like this one The Hamilton signed dial is in near mint condition having just been expertly restored to look as new. It has a satin silver finish with the hours marked by applied 18 carat solid gold Arabic numerals and dots. The crystal is clean and clear, having recently been replaced. The movement is the rarely seen Hamilton's 748 grade model with 18 jewels and the mechanics for a sweep seconds hand. The mechanism has just been professionally serviced so it is running perfectly and keeping time. Many newly acquired vintage watches need this work before they can be brought into regular use and as a service can cost £100 or more, please factor in that this work has already been done when bidding. The watch is fitted with a new very good quality Hirsch brown lizard grain strap. This is a lovely watch to wear and a collectable item. Hamilton watches are affordable at the moment but they will almost certainly increase in value over time, so do not miss the opportunity to bid on this solid gold vintage timepiece.
Hamilton History The Hamilton Watch Co., considered by many to have produced the best of America's watches, was founded in 1892 by Charles D. Rood and Henry J. Cain, setting up in Lancaster PA. The company was named after Andrew Hamilton a Scottish born immigrant, an architect who was Pennsylvania's attorney general from 1729 to 1739. Hamilton's first watch, a pocket watch, was designed by H.J.Cain in 1893. The railroad industry turned to Hamilton to put an end to railroad crashes. Many pocket watches, renowned for there precision and accuracy, were produced for railroad employees and the company advertised itself as "The Railroad Timekeeper of America". Hamilton soon saw the potential for a wider market. In World War One General Black Jack Pershing used a Hamilton to time movements of American troops. After the war Hamilton offered pendant watches in restyled cases with cloth straps to be worn as wristwatches, intended for ladies. In 1920 only 4% of the company's watches were wristwatches compared with 48% from Elgin. The first men's wristwatch was produced by Hamilton in 1922 and in the late 1920's, in order to promote sales, Hamilton introduced Art Deco designs and produced what are today highly collectable models such as the "Piping Rock" and "Spur". By the early 1930's wristwatch sales outstripped sales of pocket watches. Hamilton went on to produce the world's first electric watch in 1957, with the "Ventura" (worn by Elvis Presley) being one of the most collectable and sought after electric watches. Like all watch companies, the introduction of the quartz watch completely overshadowed the mechanical watch and although Hamilton watches are still produced today, it is generally accepted that the last collectable Hamilton mechanical watch was produced in 1969.
