HAMMERSLEY STRAWBERRY RIPE BONE CHINA 3PC BASKET SERVER
Here is a gorgeous bone china 3 piece strawberry server basket in the well known Hammersley Strawberry Ripe pattern. Click on bottom photo for closer view. This set was made in England after Hammersley & Royal Worcester Spode merged in 1976. The exterior of the lovely white base has a molded basket weave effect with strawberries, blossoms & leaves everywhere both inside & out. Each piece is trimmed in gold or gilt. There are 2 side areas or compartments to hold the cream pitcher & open sugar bowl. Imagine clotted cream or even melted chocolate in the creamer & fine confectioner's or powdered sugar in the sugar bowl. What a splendid presentation for a Special Tea or Luncheon! Basket is 10 in. by 12 in. & has a sculptured carry handle; creamer is 4¼ in. wide, sugar is 4³/8 in. wide. Bottom marks: Strawberry Ripe Hamersley & Co. Bone China Made In England Member of Spode Group. If perfect this same set is listed for $200.00 at Replacements Ltd. The basket has 2 hairlines on the underneath side - only 1 goes through; a flea bite near the top edge the size of a pin head & ¼ in. section of very tiny bubbles in the glaze on the creamer just below the spout. Hammersley & Co. was based at Alsager Pottery, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent. The company began in 1887 & in 1970 was bought by Carborundum Ltd who had already purchased W. T. Copeland in 1966 (this is the company that followed on from Spode in the 19th century).
In 1976 the companies merged with Royal Worcester to become Royal Worcester Spode Ltd. The Hammersly trade name was taken over by Palissy Pottery Ltd in 1982, part of the group, & the Hammersley's Works closed in that year.
