HAND-CARVED CHESS TABLE W/ WHITE & BLACK ONYX INSET

One-Of-A-Kind Hand-Carved Chess Table with White & Black Onyx Inset top & 2 Stools

In this collection of furniture is a special Black and White Onyx Stone Chess Board, a hand-carved table and 2 hand-carved stools.  Here is the story from the original owner:

In 1969, after leaving Sheppard AFB, TX on my way to Clark AFB, Philippines, I used my Air Force leave to visit my parents in Pennsylvania before going overseas. On the way there, two other airmen and I shared a ride together to get to Pennsylvania. As we traveled, we entered the state of Missouri. After seeing a continuous set of signs that indicated so many miles to the ‘Mule Trading Post’, we decided to stop and check out the attractions and souvenirs. While browsing around, I discovered this one piece, a beautiful black and white Onyx chess board. I took the chess board home to my parents and they kept it for me while I was overseas.

After arriving in the Philippines in 1969, I was stationed at Clark Air Base as a Medical Material Specialist. When I was touring around the country on my time off, I noticed the large variety of items carved out of wood. Then a picture began to develop in my mind of a chess table with two stools carved out of wood.

Playing chess was one of my favorite pastimes and I had always pictured myself sitting at a special hand carved table for this purpose. At that point, I sat down and started to put my ideas on paper. Later a friend of mine started fine tuning my drafts.

I began visiting many wood carving shops and saw the various ideas which could be incorporated in this furniture. Then my friend and I began finalizing the drawings. One shop called ‘PRISCILLA'S’ was a short distance from the main gate of the Base on the other side of the railroad tracks and had about six employees. I asked to view each person’s projects to see how they presented their carvings. After visiting a dozen or more of other shops, I chose this particular place for its quality and excellent work.

This set of furniture is one of a kind since it was made to my exact specifications and no other place displayed pieces like these. After developing the idea of these unique pieces, I had to write home to my parents for the exact measurements of the stone so that it would fit in the table top correctly. The chess board is different in length from one side to another. The stone will only fit in the table top one way.

Once it was made, the problem of how I was going to ship it back to the US came up. The Air Force couple and their son, who had finished the drawings with me, were returning to the US and they very graciously added it to their household goods to be shipped to their next base in South Dakota. I was stationed in North Dakota in late 1970 and two years later, when I went to visit them, I finally was able to put the insert of the black & white onyx into the table.

Clark Air Base and the surrounding areas have since been buried under several feet of volcanic ash from Mt Pinatubo. None of the wood carving shops survived, to the best of my knowledge.

Dimensions:

The table stands 29” high, the width and depth are both 22 ½”.
The table top is also 3” high and has eight pawns hand-carved on two sides and the other two sides both display the remaining eight hand-carved chess pieces. The table top can be removed, there are locking pieces that attach to the legs.

Under the table top, between the four legs, are displayed two wooden figures - a king and a queen. They are hand-carved displaying the features exhibited on a deck of cards. Both figures are about 10 ½” tall and they both can easily be removed.

The stools are 20” high, the width and depth is 17”.
There are two stools with removable leather seats. The color of the covers can be easily changed. The outside of each leg of both stools has hand carved ornamental scroll work.
