For sale is a new print of a January, 1899 Harpers cover done by Edward Penfield for the magazine. The cover shows a man, attired in the classic winter garb of the era including a fur shawl and fur hat. He is being drawn in a sleigh by a stylish-looking horse. Penfield loved animals and frequently incorporated cats, dogs and horses into his covers. A very pleasant scene painted by one of America’s best-known artistic names.
In the late 19th and early 20th Century, Edward Penfield was a huge influence on the artistic cultural landscape. As an illustrator and artist, Penfield was to have a productive and prolific career. Though his name is synonymous with Harper’s Weekly, where he produced multitudes of covers and illustrations, he also did posters and paintings that fetch incredible sums today. He once said that “We are a bit tired of the very serious nowadays, and a little frivolity is refreshing; and yet frivolity to be successful must be most thoroughly studied.” Combining a whimsical touch with a studied technique, he made an enduring contribution to the world of popular culture and the fine arts.
This print is on a quality 100# high glossy text paper. The poster measures 16.75” (w) X 9.75” (h). It has a small border to allow for framing. This format is perfect for a standard 16” x 20” frame, a manageable size for a variety of decorating purposes.
