The future of Metal Halide Lighting is PULSE START!
This fixture uses the same technology used in those new gas station canopy lights that are so, so much brighter than the old ones!
It has manifold advantages over conventional “probe start” metal halide:
- Pulse Start Bulbs Start Out Brighter and maintain 80% of their initial light output at median life.
Common metal halide bulbs only maintain 65% of their initial light output at median life and keep losing output.

A pulse start 400 w bulbs make 44,000 initial lms and 35,200 lumens at median life. This compares to regular 400 w metal halide that only starts out at 36,000 lms and has a median output of only 23,400 to 26,000 lms
- These Nice lights don’t turn PINK!
Take a close look at older standard metal halide fixtures! They color shift to make pink light as the bulbs age! Yuck! Pulse Start metal halide stays nice and white through out its life!
In his classic book, Health and Light, Dr. John N.Ott recounts totally bizarre effects of pink light. Apparently pink light will wreck the sex life of a mink. In a scientific study, ninety percent of male mink exposed to continuous pink light were experimentally found to be sexually “non-working” and female mink required pregnant mare serum hormone shots to achieve pregnancy.
Four pink mink died prematurely due to a strange malady and the pink treated mink also become aggressive.
Questionnaires given to college students indicated that there might be a link between wearing pink tinted sunglasses and emotional disturbances. Based upon this research, John Ott recommended to the Kansas City Royals that players switch from pink tinted to medium gray glasses. The director Syd Thrift wrote back to John Ott “It was amazing to observe how the player was changed from a hyper-aggressive and helmet-throwing player to a very relaxed, confident person” , pg 116, supra
But you don’t have to be in the pink! Pulse start metal halide bulbs don’t have the electrode problems that cause this color shift!
- Fast Starting and Restarting.
Standard metal halide bulbs need to sizzle for 8-12 minutes before they fully come on. As a result, many people are forced to leave regular metal halide fixtures on all day so they are not in the dark In just 100 seconds, a pulse start lamp is running at 25% power and it reaches full brightness in 180 seconds. In 3 minutes a regular metal halide bulb has barely even started.

- Don’t buy a fly & dust catcher!

There are some really crummy low bay fixtures around. They catch flies and dust that get trapped inside! The debris settles on the bottom lens and blocks your light. Once it gets inside, dust sticks like a magnet to the reflector and fouls it!
The problem is that it is tough to seal where the reflector and the ballast enclosure meet. Usually the bulb just sticks through a hole in the top of the reflector that provides an entrance for dirt to settle on the bottom lens.

Prismatic Optics are the Best
They work in BOTH HIGH and LOW BAYs
The prism on this fixture makes it superior to either conventional High Bay or Low Bay fixtures. By scientifically bending light down, this fixture will deliver higher light levels on the horizontal plane than high or low bay fixtures. At the same time it produces very good illumination on vertical surfaces.
“High bay” fixtures normally have spun aluminum reflectors that must be hung very high. If they are hung low, they only produce a little pool of light on the floor. About 23% of the light generated by the bulb is trapped in internal reflections.
The optics on “Low Bay” fixtures are really high bay reflectors that are “wrecked” with white paint. The white paint and lens helps scatter the light. But the white paint further destroys the efficiency of the fixture. Light is trapped rattling around inside of the fixture. Only 74.6% of the light produced by the bulb actually gets out of the fixture.
Our fixtures prismatic refractors deliver about 90.9% of the light of the light produced by the bulb. While at the same time, the horizontal utilization coefficient, the ability of the fixture to direct light on a horizontal plane, is higher than a typical high bay fixture.
But most importantly the patented prismatic refractor delivers “3-D” illumination.

The problem with conventional metal halide fixtures is that they just put pools of light on the floor. Little light is cast on vertical surfaces. So you in a repair shop, you can’t see in wheel wells. Or in a warehouse, light is not shed on the vertical faces of pallet racks.
Conventional metal halide fixtures create a cave like atmospheres with dark ceilings and walls.
Our fixtures prismatic refractor bends light down from the ceiling in all directions. So you can see every where you look! Excellent uniform lighting is produced! It makes indoor spaces appear larger and more spacious.
Achieve Uniform Lighting with Larger Fixture Spacings.
A standard type of low bay or high bay light mainly directs light straight down. So the highest light levels are produced directly underneath the light fixture. You see, light levels approximately drop off according to an inverse square law. So when you get twice the distance from a constant source, the light level is only at one fourth intensity. So light levels drop off steeply as you get further away from the fixture.
