HINKS / MESSENGER VICTORIAN ANTIQUE BANQUET OIL LAMP

Another quality item searched for with care by Jims Things

At 32 inches tall this is perhaps the largest of the Victorian oil lamps produced in the 19th century and is certainly one of the best looking.

The lamp stands on a 15 inch reeded column that has a deeply decorated molded base, matching in reverse its topmost capital. Underneath the base there is a massive cast iron slug to give this lamp the stability needed if it were knocked.

Above the column the lamps font has a holding cage that threads into the capital and provides a perfect fit for the font which, again matches the base with vertical fluting to the upper shoulder.

A Hinks /Messenger bayonet fitting holds the double Duplex burner which has a lifter key to allow the lamp to be lit without the need to remove the chimney or the shade. The only damage to the burner was with the small bridge across the wicks and in the fourth photograph you will see that I have soldered a small piece of brass to the centre of the bridge which is now stronger than the original even though its prescence is not needed for efficient operation of the lamp.

The wick control wheel is a Hinks patent and operates both of the wicks through a single rod mounted with two control wheels, one for either wick. On the other side there is also a further Hinks patent invention which is the wick snuffer lever complete with its small operating cage.

The lamp was bought originally from the famous Victorian store of Maples, Tottenham Court Road, London and their name appears on the face of the wick control wheel.

The weight of the complete lamp is just under 11 lbs with a Griffin brand oval bulge chimney and an etched shade and completes what is a very impressive lamp that will not disappoint you.
