Here be 2 HOPI plaza dance wands. Purchased originally at a Sotheby's auction in 1995. Sotheby's auction: Fine American Indian Art, #N06709 of 05/23/95. from the catalogue: Property from the Janss Collection lot #60 Two Hopi Cottonwood Dance Wands, each with tapering handle, the " blades " decorated in numerous colors, with germinating corn symbols and stylized clouds(?), the largest with a two-horned fertility god at the top. Cf. Wade, ed., 1986, p. 32, pl. 16: "...The importance is not in the form of the object but in its germination and fertility images..."; Antes, 1981, p. 142. These are exceptional items that rarely come onto the open market. Used in the women's Maraw ceremony, the figure depicted is most likely Aaloosaka, the God of Germination. The catalogue describes them as made from cottonwood. This is, however, mistaken. These wands are made from pine crate slat wood, which was the most common material used by the Hopi for dance wands after the 1880's, until plywood became available. They are unpainted on the obverse and the wide grain of the pine is clearly visable. They are, respectively, 22" long and 24" long. All relevant paper work, for provenance, will be included. They will be sent to only a USA address. S/H is $50.00 and insurance is STRONGLY recommended, otherwise buyer assumes risk. PLEASE NOTE: PayPal is NOT accepted for these, unless fees are included. Check or M.O. is accepted. Monies must clear before shipment. Buyer and I will discuss it all when purchased. |
