Up for auction is an adorable HORSE fetish carving by well-known Zuni Pueblo artisan Freddie Leekya. This stout fellow is carved from Zuni rock, a form of travertine found near the pueblo. He stands just over 2&1/4 inches tall at the ears, is almost 3 inches long from nose to tail, and a little over an inch wide. The eyes appear are inlaid turquoise and the hooves are a dark brown slightly translucent material. The artist has etched his initials, "FL" on the right front hoof.
This is a Native American hand-carved miniature sculpture and comes from the Zuni Pueblo in northern New Mexico.
In Zuni tradition each animal has special powers and characteristics that may aid the owner of a fetish carved in the image of that animal. The horse represents strength, swiftness, and enlightenment. He also possesses healing powers.
