 ITALIAN PHOTOBUSTA POSTERS

Italian Film Posters have been produced in Italy since the early days of silent film cinema.  These posters were used to advertize, often behind glass, in front of the theatre, to draw in an audience to see the latest Italian, European and American films released that year in Italy.  The color graphics of Italian posters, were usually most unique and different from posters made in any other country.  The titles and descriptions on the poster were normally translated into Italian, however the names of the film stars, directors, producers and the film studio names remained, of course, the same.  The posters were usually machine folded after production, and then shipped to the theatre for display.

"Photobusta" Posters, have been printed in Italy, since the 1930's, on glossy paper, a bit thinner than the American half sheet poster (which they are usually closest to in size, but a bit smaller).  These were displayed, usually behind glass in the lobby or the exterior of the theatre to advertize the current film playing or coming attractions.  The color graphics and photos depicting dramatic moments in the film, are usually most unique and different from posters made in any other country.  They were usually machine folded once after production, and then shipped in a large slipcover envelope to the theatre for display.  

Italian posters most often come in four sizes. The most common (called a one-panel or a two-sheet) measures 39" x 55". There are also two-panel posters (also called four-sheets) that measure 55" x 78" (and are printed in two sections). There are also "photobustas", which are printed on glossy paper and come in a variety of sizes and are most commonly are made in sets (similar to U.S. lobby cards, except that they are almost always quite a bit larger, and on thinner paper). Photobustas can vary quite a bit in size. Some of them measure only slightly larger than a U.S. lobby card, and some measure slightly smaller than a U.S. one-sheet! But they almost always come in a set of 8 (but this too varies!). Finally, there are locandinas, which somewhat resemble U.S. inserts, and which also come in a variety of sizes.
