Machine Tool Operation For Lathe & Forge Work
In the first chapter of this 340 plus page book, the author discusses the machinists trade. He describes the machinists work and potential, giving the reader a look at the actual work he'll do.
In the next chapter, he discusses lathes and how they are constructed. Each and every part of the lathe, from the bed to special attachments, is covered.
For the next several chapters, specific operations on the lathe are discussed. Cutting and turning and tapers and angles are covered first and then it's on to threads and thread cutting. The book is rounded out by four chapters detailing bench and forgework.
If you want to learn how to use the lathe to do machine work in your shop, this would be a good read. It's got lots of information and illustrations so it's pretty easy to understand.

Manual Of Lathework Thread Cutting And Turning Instruction
This 425 page book from the late 1800's first covers the history of the lathe up until the introduction of screw threads. It then covers the advancement of the lathe after screw threads were introduced.
Nine chapters follow that each discuss a different part of the lathe's design. From the bed to cutting attachments, the author has really taken the time to lay it all out clearly.
The remainder of the book is devoted to lathework in general. Each chapter details a different set of functions that the lathe can accomplish and how.
There's no bones about it, this is a detailed, concise book about lathework. Beginners and experienced lathe-workers will find value in these well-written, illustrated instructions.

Machinists Guide To Advanced Machine Work
This is a large book for the machinist, it's got over 730 pages, divided into 12 sections. Each section covers a different area of machine work with detailed explainations and illustrations.
The first five sections cover lathework from beginning to end. The author packs a ton of information about lathes and their uses into these sections.
The next five chapters of the book discuss drilling, planing, milling and grinding. Finish off the book with a lesson in gear making and a final chapter on tool-making.
I believe that if one were to study this book and put the information into practice, he or she would do well in the machine shop. It's a good bit of shop knowlege that no machinist or machinist-wannabe should be without.

The Practical Machinist Guide To Metal Lathework, Grinding, Drilling & More
In the first chapter of this 524 page book, the author dives right into the cutting tools used with lathes and planing machines. Chapter two goes on to describe proper cutting speeds & feed.
Boring and screw cutting are covered in the next two illustrated chapters. From there, the author moves on to lathe dogs, chucks and turning accentrics. A full chapter is devoted to hand-turning, which contains illustrations and in-depth instructions.
In the last half of the book, the author discusses milling and grinding machines and the tools used with them. He also covers laying out the work and then proceeds to desribe and illustrate the tools used. In the final chapters, he covers calculations and settings every machinist can use.
I'm not a machinist, but I believe that with the information contained in this book, I could get there from here. It's full of detailed drawings and superb instructions that take into account any lack of previous experience. It's a book I would want in my machine shop referrence library for sure.

This book is 350 pages long, divided into 13 illustrated chapters. It begins with a lesson in thread cutting processes and classes of screw threads.
Chapter two dives into thread cutting on a lathe. Thread cutting attachments, taps and dies are fully discussed and explained in the following chapters.
Threading machines and thread mills are covered beginning in chapter 9. Two chapters follow this that detail attachments and other information about the thread mill. Chapter 12 discusses thread rolling and the final chapter details precision screw thread cutting.
It seems that the author fully understood thread cutting from beginning to end and he put that knowledge into this book. I believe one could learn to do screw cutting from this book.

Shaping Metal By Lathework, Hardening & Tempering
This book is 480 pages long and contains 21 chapters on the topic of metalworking. In the beginning, it defines and describes materials and their properties. Using this information, the reader then learns about forging, hardening and tempering.
Next, metal alloys are explored and informational tables are included. Melting and combining metals is discussed at length as are casting and founding work.
Following that, sheet metal work by cutting and bending is discussed. And next is an in-depth lesson in doing sheet metal work on the lathe. The book comes together with a final chapter on soldering your work.
This is a pretty cool book with lots and lots of information to absorb. It's got a good number of illustrations that help get the point across. It's a book I'd want by my side to learn metal lathework for sure.
