CHECK MY MANY OTHER 1950’S CERAMICS POSTED TONIGHT!
DESCRIPTION: This is a 10-1/4” plate with a stamp on back that reads ‘Knowles Hiawatha – an underglaze print – a Kalla design – U.S.A.’. The motif on the plate is vaguely Native American (hence the name Hiawatha, albeit corny), with a central 1950’s star with spindly arms, which determines a kind of ‘reverberation’ pattern outwards with other echoing lines, as if a Southwest blanket motif. This is all in a mustard color on white. This fits the High Modernist aesthetic of the ‘50’s, and can only have been made between 1957 and 1962, since it was designed by Erwin Kalla, who had studied design with Eero Saarinen at Cranbrook Academy, who had just come on board at Knowles, and who was very opinionated about what needed to be done to change dinnerware design to match the spectacle and politesse of eating. It smacks of the Solar pattern by Edwin M. Knowles & Co., which closed in 1962.
