This listing is for one 4in x 1/2in firesteel rod with lanyard and striker. This is the largest diameter firesteel anywhere. With normal use it will last a lifetime. I guarantee you will not find a rod with striker this big anywhere else. These throw the best sparks of any firesteel rod I've ever seen. Great for survival kits or to keep you and your friends entertained. If you ever get in a stranded situation you would be very glad to have one of these.

Made from the pure sparking material like the small rods found mounted on the top of the popular magnesium-striker bars.

Rod:  This rod is designed to make a hotter, more concentrated spark for lighting a greater variety of tinders especially the bigger stuff.  It is capable of lighting even damp leaves on fire (yes I have actually done this). This rod will work just as well after being completely submerged in water and it can be used in the rain and wind. Great for camping, survival activities, scouts, and other outdoor fun. Excellent for practicing on different types of tinders and different conditions as this rod will last for tens of thousands of sparks. When the time comes to use a smaller flint rod you will be ready.

Striker:  I cannot emphasize enough that the type of striker used on firesteel rods is crucial to obtaining a good spark. The hand made, super hardened steel striker that comes with this rod is the ideal shape and hardness to create that perfect spark for lighting a large variety of tinders(works much better than a regular hacksaw blade etc). The custom curved end of the striker helps to prolong the life of the firesteel because it does not create divots or flat areas like other strikers.

Lanyard:  Natural fiber lanyard is hand chordaged onto the striker. When you are in a pinch for good dry tinder the natural fiber lanyard with this rod can be cut and frayed to make an excellent tinder. Many fires can be started with this fiber lanyard and it can be re-knotted so the striker is not lost.

For best sparking results use the curved end of the striker to wrap around the rod with the point on the side away from you. When striking hold the striker firmly to the rod and strike quickly and away from yourself. For better accuracy of spark-to-tinder hold the striker above the tinder and press it firmly to the rod. Then pull the rod back towards yourself quickly as you hold the striker in position. It will take a few strikes at first to get a good spark as you will have to scrape off the black finish first.
