Synopsis
When attempting to describe the prose stylings of Tom Robbins, critics tend to employ a lot of impressive adjectives--bombastic, extravagant, magniloquent, ostentatious. But they could do better with a single syllable--fun. Written entirely in the second person, HALF ASLEEP IN FROG PAJAMAS stars "you" as Gwendolyn Mati, a Filipino stockbroker who spends a long Easter weekend trying to save her job in the wake of a disastrous market collapse. Along the way, Gwen has to pacify her best friend Q-Jo, a 300-pound psychic, and track down a missing chimpanzee using banana popsicles as bait. But the fun really starts when Gwen gets involved with financial hotshot Larry Diamond, who exhorts the far-out insights of the African Bozo tribe, explains why the world's frog population is slowly dwindling, and seeks an Eastern mystic who claims to cure cancer using enemas. Somehow Robbins ties these wildly divergent storylines together in this madcap adventure that "you" are not soon to forget.

Publisher's Note
Available for the first time in trade paperback, Tom Robbins' inventive, irreverent, and highly praised Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas is an outrageous novel that begins on the day the stock market falls out of bed and breaks its back.
When the stock market crashes on the Thursday before Easter, you -- an ambitious, although ineffectual and not entirely ethical young broker -- areconvinced youre facing the Weekend from Hell. Before the market reopens on Monday, youre going to have to scramble and scheme to cover your butt, butthere's no way you can anticipate the baffling disappearance of a 300-pound psychic, the fall from grace of a born-again monkey, or the intrusion in yourlife of a tattooed stranger intent on blowing your mind and most of your fuses. Over these fateful three days, you will be forced to confront everything frommysterious African rituals to legendary amphibians, from tarot-card bombshells to street violence, from your own sexuality to outer space. This is, afterall, a Tom Robbins novel -- and the author has never been in finer form.

Industry reviews
