1937 offset litho print of the painting
HAMLET and HORATIO in the Graveyard with Skull
by French artist
Eugene Delacroix 1828
11 x 13.25 inches or approx 27.5 x 33 cm
Based on Shakespeare's text:
Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio; a fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy; he hath borne me on his back a thousand times; and now, how abhorred in my imagination it is! My gorge rises at it. Here hung those lips that I have kissed I know not how oft. Where be your gibes now? (Hamlet, V.i)
Original painting Hamlet und Horatio auf dem Friedhof is in the Vienna Albertina collection
Ask if you would like a copy of the text of the 1937 notes by Bernard Myers, Ph.D, the NYU art historian who wrote for the project.
This print on matte stock was part of a series published in New Jersey in 1937. The painting was included in a lithographing project for an art appreciation series supported by such dignitaries as Eleanor Roosevelt. According to the Harvard University Crimson newspaper, the Great Depression project was inexplicably abandoned and its high quality glass plates found in a government warehouse in the mid-1970s. The technology was an innovative combination of lithography and offset. We acquired these in the large portfolio envelopes received by subscribers, four different prints per installment. While a large number were printed in 1937 under the auspices of the National Committee for Art Appreciation, it may be hard to find one in superior condition just when you want it.
Frame it, collect it or use in your hard copy publication. No condition issues. No stains, no chips, no tears, no creases, no damp lines, no foxing. The print is somewhat bigger than our scanner. Sturdy, speedy mailing between fresh cardboard in stiff new mailer. We do not reproduce prints. Fine condition. Sent quickly on payment. The seller is writing a history of this project for publication.
