Handcrafted Redheart Wood Spurtle Spirtle

~ 10 3/4 inches long - can be used in the largest pots

Used for stiring soups and hot cereal

Spurtle or Spirtle: The spurtle has a long history in Scotland where it was used to stir breakfast oats as they softened slowly in the pot.    A spurtle will find many other uses in your kitchen, such as a soup stir stick.

I do not use a spoon any longer as spurtles do not spash the contents upon stirring as a spoon can.   A wooden spurtle will not scratch your pots.

Just wash your spurtle in warm soapy water and leave it to dry thoroughly.

You may periodically wipe your spurtle with a little mineral oil to renew the finish. I stongly discourage the useof  cooking oils as they can go rancid - makes for a nasty pot of vittles.

Mine are hand made one-of-a-kinds.  No two are exactly alike as they are made one at a time on my lathe and hand polished with only mineral oil wipe.  The bead is more than decorative - it provides a means to catch the spirtle on the lip of the pot so it does not fall in.

Wood: Redheart -  aka chakte kok. The wood is dull pink to moderately bright red and fades with long exposure to UV. There is sometimes a purple area at the juncture between the heartwood and the sapwood.
