Handmade pottery dish Sisters of Bethlehem Holy Land

At the end of a dirt road, winding up a hill in the Judean Hills - at the foothills of the Holy City of Jerusalem - is the serene and secluded Monastery of Beit Jamal.  Founded in 1919 on the site of a 5th Century Church, this monastery is home to the Sisters of Bethlehem - 312 holy women who have taken vows of silence.  These women produce wonderful hand painted pottery and operate a small store on the premises. Work in the store is rotated every few years and the four nuns who work in the store are permitted to talk.

We recently visited Beit Jamal, and purchased as many pieces of this unique and beautiful pottery as we could carry!  Although we would love to keep it all for ourselves, we are selling most of these pieces here on Ebay.

This piece is a round bowl, measuring 6" in diameter and 1.5" deep.  It is hand decorated with an intricate Arabesque, geometric pattern and fire-glazed.  The pattern on the inside of the bowl is colored in deep amber brown, dark blue and cream - with an edge of bright sea-foam green around the rim.  The underside of the bowl is done is done in the same green color.

This glaze is safe to use with food, but probably should not be put into a microwave or dishwasher in order to protect it and keep its longevity.  It is an absolutely gorgeous bowl, and would look amazing any way that you choose to use it (or just to be put on display!). 

Please note that since these are HAND MADE items, there may be slight differences from piece to piece -- there may also be very slight imperfections in the patterns or the glazing, due to the human touch.
