His personal life took in two marriages, years of pain with a congenital spine defect, which he sought to alleviate with drink and drugs, all of which he managed to translate into some of the most soulful music ever written, that explored a range of human emotions to which any listener could relate. Be it the heartbreak of a broken love affair, or whooping it up on a Saturday night, Hank had the ability to hit home with a pithy song that went straight to the core of the subject.
