Rabbi Menachem Mendel was famed as the "Tzemach Tzedek" after this magnum opus on Talmudic law that he authored.
The Tzemach Tzedek was unique among Chabad Rabbis because of his extraordinarily close relationship with other Jewish leaders. Rabbi Yechiel Michel Epstein spent six months under his tutelage, and told his children that he learned most of his mystical knowledge during that time. Rabbi Moshe Sofer the "Chatam Sofer" and Rabbi Akiva Eiger were also known to have a close correspondence with the Tzemach Tzedek.
Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneersohn was the grandson of the first Lubavitch Rebbe, Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, and became the son-in-law of the second Rebbe, Rabbi Dov Ber Schneuri.
He was born on the eve of Rosh Hashana 5549 (1789), to Rabbi Shalom Schachne and Devora Leah. His maternal grandfather was Rabbi Schneur Zalman (Baruchovitch) of Liadi-Lyozna, founder of Chabad Chassidus, and popularly known as the "Alter Rebbe" (Old Rabbi), or simply as the "Rav." Rabbi Menachem Mendel's father-in-law was his uncle Rabbi Dov-Ber Schneuri, the "Mitteler Rebbe," whom he succeeded as head of the Chabad Chassidim on Kislev 10, 5588 (1827 ), until his passing on Nissan 13, 5626 (1866) .
The seventh and last Lubavitch Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneersohn was fifth in a direct paternal line from this prior third Rebbe called "Menachem Mendel", and was named after him.
