The three of us tramped through nettle and thorny black berry canes for 20 minutes before the tangle of plants opened out upon a clearing. As promised, there was the cabin. A large grey cat with tufted ears sat near an inviting flower box, brimming with colorful blooms. It seemed to smile at us before leaping away around the corner of the house.

Sarah rapped on the door. Shortly thereafter, it opened and I got my first look at the one I had come to meet.

I don't know what I was expecting, but Lucia wasn't it. She looked to be 18 or 19 with deep, dark eyes and a shy smile. She greeted Sarah and Kai with hugs, and welcomed me with a shake of the hand. Hers was covered in all different colors of paint. I found out why when she led us in the front door, straight through the small living space and out the back to where she had an easel set up.

We pulled up seats and watched her work. The more we talked, the more I knew I liked her very much. Despite her young appearance, she definitely has an old soul. Before long we were laughing and joking and 'talking shop' as though we'd been friends for years.
