A highlight of mid/late 18th century book illustration

the 1780-81 Berne

Nouvelle Société Typographique edition of

Les Nouvelles [L'Heptaméron]

by

MARGUERITE D'ANGOULÊME (Queen of Navarre, 1492-1549)

with 73 plates from design by Sigmund Freudenberger [Freudeberg]

and 72 headpiece vignettes and 72 tailpieces from design by Balthasar Anton Dunker.

The 1st publication of the Nouvelle Société Typographique

Berne, chez la Nouvelle Société Typographique, 1780-1781. 3 volumes in octavo [8vo]; 187 x 117 mm.  XLVII, 275 pp.;  308 pp.;  250 pp.; pgs 161-166 repeat in volume I.

Contemporary/original  polished calf bindings with Spanish marbling.
Bright gilt stamped titling to black morocco labels.   Boards bordered with triple gilt fillets and corner devices; flat spines gilt tooled with borders and decorative designs in 4 compartments. Gilt-tooled inner dentelles with all edges gilt. Hollow back bindings with sewn in silk book marks still present in vols 2 & 3. Intact and complete contemporary marbled endsheets.

Each volume fronted with letterpress half-title page and finely engraved title page after Dunker and engraved by Eichler. 73 fabulous, finely engraved plates from designs by Freudenberger; engraved by Guttenberg, Halbou, de Longueil, Le Roy, etc.  Many of Dunker's finely detailed headpiece vignettes and tailpieces are signed and dated on the plate. A large, untrimmed copy with most plate numerals in Vol III visible at bottom edge.

Pages are in general bright and clean with only an occasional instance of superficial foxing to a plate in the margins. The tailpieces after Dunker appear to have been more heavily inked than the headpieces and there is often some mild offsetting to the facing page - as often as not, the blank recto of one of the Freudenberger plates.

All volumes sound, collated and complete. Freudenberger plates are distributed thus: 21 plates in V I, 25 plates in V II, and 27 plates in V III. Leather bindings rubbed at corners with boards peeking through. Volume I professionally rebacked; Vol III strengthened with collars at spine ends and all volumes professionally tightened/reinforced at inner hinges.

The story cycle of Marguerite's "Heptameron" presents a set of tales modeled on the Decameron; a group of travelers are detained at a retreat by foul weather and misfortune and over the course of their detention arrange - for their amusement - to compose and relate stories based on their true experience.  Their stories concern matters of greed, lust, deceit etc, with the tellers of the tales characterized in Marguerite's framing narrative. Though the story cycle was incomplete at the time of Marguerite's death, the existing narrative was complete through the seventh of the ten days intended - thus the title - Heptameron.  Purportedly fictional in character the tales no doubt lean heavily on affairs and incidents of Marguerite's intimates and acquaintances.

Illustrated with elan by the celebrated Swiss artists, Freudenberger and Dunker. Many of the renderings are erotically charged. Handsome contemporary binding. A very nice set.
