The Ambulatory Treatment of Fractures and Diseased Joints
by
Carel A. Hoefftcke

[PLEASE SEE BELOW FOR MORE PICTURES]

DETAILS: (London): William Heineman (Medical Books) Ltd., 1923. First edition. Original purple cloth binding with gilt lettering to spine. xi, 273pp. Numerous b/w photographic illustrations and line drawings within text (numbered to 1-261).  Size: 8vo - 6in (15.4cm) by 9.75in (25cm) (standard sized book).

CONDITION: Good to Very good (see table below for details). Sunning to boards, esp. front, and spine. Gilt lettering faded. Rubbing and bumping to corners. General edgewear, and wear and slight chipping to top and bottom of spine. Foxing to endpapers. Pages and illustrations clean. Sunning to top of pages. Hinges and binding firm. Bookplates of F. Paul French and J. Colin Dagnall to front pastedown (* see below). Collated and complete. *Photo(s) given of actual book.

CONTENTS: Hoefftcke's work provides a special focus on the field of treatment using extension appliances - specially constructed splints, canes, and crutches - to aid in the recovery of previously ill or injured patients.

The designs for the appliances themselves - featured in many of the illustrations - are often innovative and impressive. Their uses are discussed primarily for fractures and diseased joints, though several case studies are related in their uses for other ailments. An intriguing glimpse into the development of early 20th century medical apparatus, and in collectable condition! Inscribed by the author on the front endpaper.

[*This book comes from the private collection of chiropodial and podiatric literature amassed by eminent chiropodist J. Colin Dagnall. His collection was one of the largest of its kind in the world. Please browse our other auctions for more books from this collection.]
