What is an International Edition?

 

An International Edition Textbook is simply the international counterpart to a US Edition. Most international editions have DIFFERENT COVER and DIFFERENT ISBN on the outside covers. These books were originally created to be sold in different regions, such as England. Most international edition textbooks have identical content as US edition. 

 

Is it legal to buy International Edition Textbooks? Why is there warning statement on the book cover?


Yes. It is totally legal to use International Edition Textbooks. The United States Supreme Court has asserted your right to purchase international editions, and ruled on this issue. You can find a New York Times article about their decision here.

Textbook publishers would definitely love to have you think otherwise, to prevent you from purchasing much cheaper international edition textbook. They usually printed Sales Disclaimer like "NOT FOR SALE IN US". They even printed "THE CONTENT OF INTERNATIONAL EDITION MIGHT BE DIFFERENT FROM US EDITION" when the textbook contents are exactly the same. Please DO NOT mislead by them.
