This is an Authentic Native American Hand coiled and Hand painted Hopi "Bowl" pottery! It is approximately 3 1/2" tall and about 5 3/8" wide. It has a nice stone polished finish! The detail on the painting is very nice! The coloring on this piece is very nice. It has orange fire clouds from the outdoor firing. Hopi pottery is distinguished by its warm yellow - orange slip and polychrome designs. Traditional outdoor firing, as well as the iron content of the clay, produces variations in the yellowish surface color. It is signed on the bottom by the artist,"Nellie Nampeyo". Nellie Nampeyo was born in 1896 and passed away in 1978. She was active from 1910 - 1978. She is the daughter of Nampeyo and the sister of Fannie Nampeyo, Annie Healing Nampeyo, William Lesso, and Wesley Lesso. She was not as active as Fannie, so thus her pieces are hard to find. This piece does have a burn mark on one side. You can see this in the photo.

Since 1974, the Indian Arts and Crafts Association (IACA) with an Executive Office in Albuquerque, NM, has been instrumental in helping to promote and protect authentic American Indian arts and crafts.  The IACA is unique in that its membership is made up of individuals and businesses that represent the entire industry Indian arts: artisans, retailers, wholesalers, museums, governmental agencies, collectors and supporters.  It is an international organization whose mission is to support the effective protection and ethical promotion of authentic American Indian arts and crafts.
